ANIMALS ARE NOT RUBBISH

Animals are not rubbish

The Born Free Foundation has joined forces with Orion Children’s Books, publisher of Lauren St John’s evocative and heart-warming stories set in Africa, to launch a fun and challenging competition for children up to age 12. This will raise awareness of the need for animal conservation and encourage us all to think about why wildlife is important.

The challenge is to create an endangered animal out of rubbish or items for recycling.  If you are a creative animal lover, you (or your class) could win some fantastic prizes, including attending Born Free’s special 25th Anniversary event in London in November 2009 (details still top secret!). There are also some great resources for teachers to use to bring conservation issues into the classroom. There is also the chance to get some great posters and stickers for the Animals Are Not Rubbish campaign.

The Top 20 animal models will be going ‘on safari’ to branches of Waterstone’s bookshops across the UK during the summer – competition entrants will be invited to attend selected events with Lauren St John and representatives from the Born Free Foundation to learn more about conservation.

Lauren is setting up a fundraising arm of this campaign – The Last Leopard Fund – with the Born Free Foundation. This fund will be dedicated to the rescue, protection and care of threatened wild animals in Africa. The fund’s first project will be to contribute towards Born Free’s rescue and long term care of three leopards from a failed Cyprus Zoo.
